Two main technologies dominate: silicone/offset transfers for printed detail and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) transfers for raised, stretchable 3D marks. TPU transfers stretch with the fabric, survive repeated washing, and work on curved surfaces like sleeves and collars where embroidery would be stiff.
Heat transfer is often compared with embroidery and PVC patches. Transfers are lighter, thinner and cheaper at volume, while embroidery and PVC add texture. Most synthetic and blended fabrics accept heat transfer. Very open knits and some waterproof membranes need a lower temperature or a compatible film. A manufacturer will specify the right temperature, pressure and time for your fabric.
